MSU Spartan Teen Jazz is a program that provides high-quality music education outside of the normal school day to youths in middle and high school. Classes focus on jazz improvisation combo playing and big band playing.
Spartan Youth Jazz
Tuition is $150 for a 15-week semester or $225 for a year (fall & spring semesters). The fall 2013 semester begins on Wednesday, September 11.
Spartan Youth Jazz is led by sought-after Detroit jazz artist and educator Sean Dobbins. He serves as Program Director, drum coach and big band director. Read more.
Trumpet coach and octet director Rayse Biggs has performed and/or recorded with awarding winning musicians has received local and national acclaim for his contribution to music, specifically to jazz. Read more.
Trombone coach Tony Buccilli has extensive performing and recording experience including appearances on the Conan O'Brien Show, Hang Time, Bull, the Miss USA Pageant, and the motion picture Three to Tango. Read more.
Guitar coach Corey Allen is an active performer and educator throughout southeastern and central Michigan. He has performed with musicians including Randy Geliespie, Perry Hughes and Rodney Whitaker. Read more.
Piano coach and octet director Scott Gwinnell is an award-winning pianist, composer/arranger and educator. He has 20 professional recordings as a sideman and has recorded four of his own, including, Cass Corridor Story (2012), released by Detroit Music Factory, a part of the world-famous Mack Ave. jazz label. Bass coach and octet director Marion Hayden is one of very few female jazz bassists. She has performed or recorded with such jazz veterans as Kirk Lightsey, Ralph Peterson Jr., Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell, Steve Turre and Cecil Bridgegwater. Read more.
