Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra

Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) provides an opportunity for young musicians to learn and perform music in the Big Band tradition. SYJO rehearses on Mondays from 5:30-7 p.m. (October-May) Led by acclaimed jazz artist/educator Sean Dobbins, this band expands access to high-level jazz education for metro area youth. Performances take place at renowned jazz venues such as the Music Hall Jazz café.

SYJO is for middle school students with one or more years’ playing experience on their instrument. The ensemble is also open to non-traditional jazz instruments including, but not limited to tuba, French horn and strings.

Curriculum includes:

  • Major and Minor Scales
  • Instrumental Techniques
  • Ensemble Fundamentals
  • Beginning Improvisation
  • Beginning Jazz Repertoire

Instrumentation: saxophone (5), trumpet (4), trombone (4), drumset, guitar and piano.
