Welcome to MSU Community Music School

Music benefits everyone! The Michigan State University Community Music School (CMS), the outreach arm of the MSU College of Music, works to offer music, and its inherent possibilities, to all the community regardless of age, ability, or income.

In two locations, CMS offers opportunities for the study, appreciation, and therapeutic use of music for those of all ages and abilities. Financial aid is available to those with need.

Beat Making, Recording, and Folk Music!!

In Beat Making 101 students in grades 6-12 will learn how to use online tools to create beats, make loops, and add awesome effects to audio tracks. We are still taking enrollment so be sure to sign up now. Classes are going to start February 22. Click here for more information on Beat Making 101.
Recording 101 provides students in grades 6 -12 knowledge of basic audio recording in Audacity: setting mics and levels, multiple takes, crossfading, equalization, and normalization. Folk music classes and lessons are offered on fiddle, guitar, harmonica, banjo, bass, and ukulele with a weekly jam. Classes are taught in the aural tradition and take place at CMS and MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities.
